Holden ute cake on a beach for 21st birthday

Scott's cousin celebrated his 21st this weekend. He owns a black Holden Ute, which he loves, so we decided to make him a cake of his car.

Everything on the cake is edible and moulded mostly from fondant. Black fondant is always difficult to work with as so much colouring is required to create black that the icing becomes dry and cracks easily. This quantity of black would have taken forever to knead, luckily my wonderful husband stepped in and gave me a hand which was greatly appreciated! I tried to avoid cracking by glazing the car with a petal glaze, this worked as no further cracks formed after I applied the glaze.

The sand around the car is blended shortbread biscuits. In the past I have used brown sugar to create sand but I have never required this quantity - I thought the volume of sugar in this case would ruin the cake. I am very happy with the look of the sand and will use blended shortbread in the future asĀ opposedĀ to brown sugar.

  • time to make: 9 hours
  • favourite part: the rear headlights and sand
  • biggest challenge: cracking black fondant and shaping the cake
