Helping my cousin, Ashley, to make her first cake

My cousin Ashley came over on Saturday to make her first decorated cake which was a gift for her boyfriend. Ashley's boyfriend enjoys taking motorbikes off road so we made a cake of a country road and hill with a motorbike. It was great fun working with Ashley and she did an awesome job with this cake! We filled the sponge cake hill with M&M's Flake, mint Aero and way too much chocolate butter icing. We created the decorations out of fondant and used piping gel for water, Lindt chocolate flakes for the dirt road and mashed aero for moss on the rocks.

I am definitely up for decorating cakes with someone else again!

Fail whale, roller derby & water birthday cakes for @ferrous, @trishwaH & @Nickstar_85

Birthday cakes for Trisha, Coralie and Nick. That was a late Thursday night getting these together for a Friday night combined birthday party. I also made vegan cupcakes to go with the 3 cakes.

Companion cube cake for @bboyle - this time WITH images

For anyone that has played Portal, I attempted a companion cube cake by request from @bboyle

The cake is 15cm square and covered in royal icing and gum paste was used to create the box. This was a challenge, and I am frustrated that I was unable to make the cake square, there is gaps between the pieces.

It was a fun challenge and I am glad I finally got it done!

Engagement cake for Matt and Jamie

2 Chocolate sponge cakes covered and decorated with fondant. As always, lettering was the challenge but I think the finish was ok. I am still keen to improve the fondant covering of the cake, it was not smooth at all.

Glazed Marble Cake

Glazed-marbled-walnut-02dec10

This cake was made for @Mrs_Starz and @Mr_Meaux.

Sponge cake with 4 layers filled with white chocolate cream filling. The top is marbled with cream and melted white, dark and milk chocolate. The sides are crushed walnuts.

The challenge with this cake was lining up the layers, the chocolate collar of my previous cake hid any misalignment in the layer placement, unfortunately the hazelnut highlights it!

Lesson learnt: cake layers must be perfectly aligned to pull off a well presented cake.

Chocolate collar coffee cake

Choc-collar-coffee-cake-26dec0

This cake is my first attempt at chocolate collar work created on the 26/12/2009.

The cake is a sponge with 4 layers. I made a coffee cream filling for each layer and top using white chocolate, coffee and cream. Cocoa powder is sprinkled on top.

The collar dots are melted white and milk chocolate, the collar base is dark chocolate. Making the collar was challenging and required good timing, precision and patience - as you will see I have a few errors in chocolate set timing given the small holes around the dots.

The cake was eaten by my family after a boxing day roast.
